Getting Your Message/Website Visited – PART 2 (somewhat little known tips)

Published by awnline on June 18th, 2011 - in Getting Your Website Visited

If you haven’t read Part 1, you should and can at http://lnkd.in/JpBzkp.

If you already have an established blog with thousands of daily site visitors, this info may not be too important to you . . . if your site or blog only has 100-1,000 daily site visitors you should do this. You can check your sites visitor stats at http://visualizetraffic.com. There are over 200,000,000 websites in the USA alone. Your Global and USA overall site popularity can be checked at http://alexa.com. If your Gobal popularity is way up in the millions and you have no USA ranking, for sure you should follow the steps below. (I like for a USA ranking to be less that 100,000 – the lesser the better)

As far as search-engines are concerned, content is king/queen; always has been, and is even more so now and moving forward, will be more so. We’re not the only ones seeking info – those search-engine “spiders” are hungry little critters.

As mentioned in Part 1, you really want to put some thought into coming up with a title that might be something people would search for and then select the keyword phrases to support it. Use 2-3 word, lower-case, comma separated phrases – in most cases single words aren’t definitive enough and also are pretty much locked up by the “biggies” – hard to compete with them without deep-pockets. Once again, like the title, the keywords should be something someone would type into Googles search-box. If possible the first 3 words of the title should be the first keyword phrase. (If you’re someone who hasn’t got a domain name or site yet, apply this principle to your domain name as well)

This info is generally applicable to any website but if WordPress, make sure you have the WordPress HeadSpace2 SEO (or whichever SEO plugin you prefer), the SEO Smart Links, (for in-site linkage – has little to do with meta-tag generation even though SEO is in it’s name) Google Analytics, Google XML Sitemaps plugins installed AND SETUP before you start writing anything. DO NOT use more than 1 WordPress SEO plugin or you’ll have 2 sets of meta-tags.

Register (Don’t verify your site yet) with Google Webmaster Account, Alexa.com, Yahoo and Bing/MSN – they’re free and it can be done in 30-45 min. Successful social media setups are about engagement and the search-engine/ranking companies love to have you engage with them and to know that you’re part of their “community”. I personally believe that registering/verifying yourself and your sites with these 4 companies alone is worth approx. 500-1,000 daily site visitors before too long. I also register with Attracta.com and Compete.com, although I don’t think they treat their friends as well as the 4 main ones do.

So, if you did something like the above, then you would have to add the following meta-tag setup.

If using WordPress, the title and description tags can be set under your dashboard control panel under Settings and then General.

To add these other meta-tags, WordPress doesn’t make it the easiest. Heres the link that tells you how to do it. http://goo.gl/nBZHw

*NOTE - while Google doen’t use the meta-keyword tag for PageRank purposes anymore, some other search-engines do – I use it because even though Google doesn’t use the keyword meta-tag, Google does use keywords to classify and share your content, so it’s as good a place as any to store a record of the keywords used for that particular page.

Below I use the meta title, description, and keywords tag examples I used to share this info with http://www.rejaneclaasen.com. Please visit and Like their site and subscribe to their newsletter/feed

<title>Women in Poverty – Reclaiming Their Hope and Power</title>
<meta name=description content=”Women in Poverty – Reclaiming Their Hope and Power”, is dedicated to casting a spotlight on the challenges faced by women and girls in poverty – but also about their hopes and the reclaiming of their power”>
<meta name=keywords content=”women in poverty, exploitation of women, surviving abuse, reclaiming hope and power, sexual violence, human trafficking, child labor, rejaneclaasen blog “>
<meta name=alexaVerifyID content=”**REGISTER WITH ALEXA.COM for key**”>
<meta name=y_key content=”**REGISTER WITH YAHOO for Y-Key**”>
<meta name=msvalidate.01 content=”**SITE VALIDATE WITH BING OR MSN.COM for key**”>
<meta name=google-site-verification content=”**SITE REGISTER WITH GOOGLE**”>
<meta name=language content=”en-us”> (or whatever language the site is in)
<meta name=geo.placename content=”WHATEVER YOUR COUNTRY IS”>
<meta name=geo.region content=”**WHATEVER YOUR COUNTY/PROVINCE IS**”>
<meta name=geo.position content=”**WHATEVER YOUR CITY IS**”>
<meta name=googlebot content=”index,follow”>
<meta name=YahooSeeker content=”index, follow”>
<meta name=robots content=”index,follow”>
<meta name=ROBOTS content=”NOARCHIVE”>
<meta name=contributor content=”**YOUR NAME** @ **YOUR DOMAIN NAME**”>     (without the http://www.)

NOW verify your site with Google, Alexa, Yahoo and Bing and submit your /sitemap.xml if necessary

Make note of your sites daily visitors at VisualizeTraffic.com and it’s overall Global and USA popularity at Alexa.com

In a week recheck your stats – if they haven’t improved, adjust/change your words/wording, resubmit your sitemap.xml and check again in another week

Anything shared above won’t mean diddley-squat unless you have some kind of acceptable content.

Hope this is helpful to you.
